You’ve spent countless hours blogging providing valuable content. Your articles have been meticulously edited. How do you get people to actually see your blog posts?
One of the largest mistakes bloggers make is not doing the research behind post visibility. Let’s look at some ways to get your work seen, and increase the traffic to your site. Remember that blog site traffic equals marketing profitability. It can take time and persistence to see results.
The majority of bloggers use WordPress for its simplicity and easy user management. It’s a powerful tool when implemented properly. There are many free designs and themes, however I would advise keeping away from using those. You want to be unique and stand out from the crowd. If thousands of people are using the same template their blogs are going to be buried.
WordPress offers customizable templates and professional themes for a small fee. I would suggest using one of these themes. I paid $35 for my theme and have customized it. If you aren’t familiar with coding, you can always enlist the help of a WordPress designer, or even have your own 100% custom theme created.
Search engine optimization is fundamental for your blog’s success. WordPress has over 45,000 plugins to help meet your website needs. Doing a simple search in the plugins page for SEO will bring up 3,500 items. Below are a few suggestions of SEO plugins to try.
I personally use All in One SEO Pack. They have a free and paid professional version. I find it to be user friendly for beginners as you can hover your mouse over each item, and a detailed explanation will pop up in a new window. They also provide a Quickstart Beginner’s Guide, Advanced User Guide, and premium support forums.
Yoast is another great option for SEO. They have a configuration wizard to help set up the plugin for your site. It will start after you activate the plugin. There is also a free and a premium version of the program. There are multiple help articles on their site. They also offer one on one email support to users that purchase Yoast SEO Premium.
You can try out both programs for free. Find the one that is easiest for you to navigate. You can delete the plugin if it doesn’t suit your needs. If you are completely lost regarding SEO, there are free online classes available to bring you up to speed.
One of the easiest ways to increase traffic is to allow the shareability of your posts. Make sure that your blog has social sharing buttons. You want to make it as simple as possible for a reader to pass on your inspiring work. Depending on what template you purchased, these should be already installed. If not, you will want to reach out to someone with programming capabilities.
I have three social share buttons activated on my site, (Facebook, G+ and Twitter). Tiny numbers next to each of the icons show how many times the blog has been shared. They are physically located in the sidebar of the blog.
These buttons will help you to gain followers and generate unique fans within the same target interest group. They should be on all content that you create.
You will also want to have links to your other social media accounts. If you aren’t marketing your product heavily in your blog posts, having a link to that page will be a potential income developer.
Activate the capability for users to comment on your posts. This allows them to ask questions and have direct interaction with you. The more interaction on your blog, the more visible it becomes.
You will want to adjust the setting so it’s easy for people to comment, and difficult for spammers to flood your site. Activate the “Show word verification for comments.” This requires that everyone pass a typing test to reduce spam. You may need to install an Anti-Spam plugin if your site gets attacked.
If you are getting limited interaction in the comments section, you can ask for comments at the end of your article. This encourages people to share their opinion. Try to come up with a unique statement for each post that generates activity.
Most importantly, respond to every appropriate comment. Make sure to do this in a timely fashion. Usually the same day the comment is made. This shows that you care and are paying attention. This is how you cultivate relationships in your target community. When reading other people’s blogs, be sure to leave comments as well.
There are plugins you can install that ensures all your replies are read. You can give commenters an option to have your reply emailed directly to them.
DISQUS is a plugin for comments that makes it easy for publishers to bring their content to life and engage communities. It has some built in tracking to help understand your audience. It encourages user interaction as there are upvotes and downvotes, rich media commenting, etc.
